The Beguiling is extremely proud to announce an event at Little Island Comics with Tomi Ungerer. He is in town for the screening of Far Out Isn't Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, a documentary about his fascinating work and life, as part of TIFF (Screening Times and Locations). We have not been this excited about an artist profile since Crumb (1994). I watched it last night, and it is an compelling and engaging introduction to the man and his diverse body of work. While perhaps most known for his children's work (The Three Robbers, Moon Man, etc.), his social and erotic images are as powerful as anything you find in our shop.
The event is taking place around the corner at Little Island Comics. For more information, please refer to the Little Island Comics website. See you September 8th!
Check out the film's trailer:

Comics Versus Art Book Launch
With author Dr. Bart Beaty
Wednesday, September 26th, 2012 @ 7PM
@ The Central, 603 Markham Street
Free to attend!
Presented by The Beguiling Books & Art
You're cordially invited to attend the official book launch of Comics Versus Art, the brand new book of comics criticism by Dr. Bart Beaty. Bart has been a long time friend of The Beguiling and is a regular contributor on the subject of French comics to ComicsReporter.com.
"Comics Versus Art" examines the relationship between comics and the art establishment, from museums and auction houses to galleries and the press. It's an interesting book that challenges the notions of the general public's opinion of comics and of art, as well as the closely held beliefs of the comics cognoscenti.
Beaty will be presenting from the work, and it will be a good time digging into a subject of which we can only assume that you are incredibly interested, because who isn't interested in comics? And ART?!
See you there!

Hooray! Kate Beaton's lovely and charming 2013 calendars are now for sale in store! There She Blows is a more literary-themed calendar, and Beethoven Birthday Party is a more general-interest historical calendar, but they're both uproariously funny and wonderful, and we recommend them. Maybe one at home, one at the office? Available on both floors.

Luckily for you fine people, we've been able to restock them. They're available on the second floor, on the webcomics rack.

If you haven't read it, it's pretty great. It's about some nerds who accidentally end the world with their nerd computer game, and are desperately trying to survive. Then it gets weird.

Minmar Gaslight Productions Presents
Real Life Superhero
Written By Steven Jackson
Directed By Stephen English
A writer grapples with the question of what makes a hero, after the death of an ordinary man who decided to put on a superhero costume and take to the streets in Real Life Superhero, a new gripping drama by Steven Jackson.
Directed by Stephen English, Real Life Superhero follows the life of Scott Cooke, a simple man who escapes from his daily life into the night to emerge as Justice, a superhero who lives by his name. As the writer delves into the life of Scott through the people in his life, questions are raised; who was Scott Cooke and why did he put on a costume? Was he crazy or a crime fighter? Was he in fact a real life superhero?
Part comic book, part existential journey, Real Life Superhero dynamically captures the all too real phenomena when people choose to bridge the gap of fantasy and reality and become the hero that society desperately needs. Deep in Cabbagetown at the Winchester Street Theatre, a city is illuminated, a dark alley appears and a crime brings forth a superhero. An audience will be transported, frame by frame, into this world, but will they be the same when they leave?

“Superman, you don't think he's Jewish?” asks Michael Chabon’s character Sammy Clay. “Coming over from the old country, changing his name like that. Clark Kent, only a Jew would pick a name like that for himself.”
Explore the prominent role of Jewish artists in comic book history. From the superheroes and their largely Jewish creators to more modern innovations such as A Contract with God, Maus, and The Rabbi’s Cat, graphic novels have become an important subgenre of modern Jewish literature, exploring themes of generational conflict, assimilation and Americanization, and the diasporic search for home.
July 19: History of Jewish Contributions to Comics
July 26: Will Eisner’s Contract with God
August 2: Art Spiegelman’s Maus I
August 9: Joann Sfar’s The Rabbi’s Cat
